Abstract

Objective: The discussions with startup founders brought out the current state of startups in India. It also brought out the challenges ahead and point to the way forward.  This study intends to explore the practical hands-on experiences, challenges faced and the approach taken by startup founders, in the technology sector. The objective is to find the answers to the question of what are the key  challenges faced by tech startup founders in their entrepreneurial journeys and the strategies adopted to successfully navigate through them. It also suggests a way forward for both the startup founders and the various industry bodies focusing on startups.
Methods: Since startups is a priority topic for the startup ecosystem, we decided to delve into it with venture capitalists, industry bodies, founders and others involved with startups. We used the qualitative method in this study.  We conducted in-depth interviews with founders using a semi-structured questionnaire. We did a thematic analysis of the discussion transcripts.
Results: We were able to understand their experiences and challenges faced. It also brought out the strategic decisions and approaches they took. The thematic analysis revealed the challenges around startups, usage of funds by startups, how the industry bodies are providing support to startups and how venture capitalists are approaching this etc.
Conclusion: There are various challenges for the startups, funding through the various stages comes out on top. The industry interactions show that lot of the startups are stuck in the starting stage. About 75% of the funding happens in the Seed and early stages. The way forward after that narrows into a thin line. About 85% of seed stage startups do not make it to Series A within five years. Many stay at the same stage for a much longer duration. They keep working through similar challenges.  The study findings highlight the importance of optimal usage of funds made available to the startup founders. Various factors are involved. Availability of adequate funding, interaction between fund providers and startup founders, ethics to be adopted by founders in the use of funds received, instances of well-known misuse of funds, instances of failures due to greed of the founders, focus on unicorn status rather than revenue growth, misrepresentation of facts etc. . By studying these factors, the research provides valuable lessons for aspiring entrepreneurs.  It helps investors and policymakers also.  It gives pointers to other stakeholders to support the ecosystem.  The implications are to enhance strategies for investment.  It helps in the improvement of intervention and support by government.  It also helps in refinement of best practices that affect the growth of startups.
