Human Capital and Digital Transformation in Enhancing Entrepreneurial Performance of SMEs: A System Thinking and System Dynamics Approach

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) operate in an increasingly dynamic and digitally driven business environment, requiring organizations to strengthen human capital while accelerating digital transformation to sustain entrepreneurial performance. However, previous studies have predominantly examined these relationships using static statistical approaches, providing limited understanding of the dynamic interactions and feedback mechanisms among key variables. This study aims to develop a dynamic conceptual model that explains how human capital and digital transformation interact to enhance entrepreneurial performance in SMEs through the integration of System Thinking and System Dynamics. A qualitative System Thinking approach is employed to identify causal relationships and construct Causal Loop Diagrams (CLDs), while System Dynamics modeling is used to develop Stock-and-Flow Diagrams and simulate long-term behavioral patterns under different policy scenarios. The proposed model incorporates reinforcing and balancing feedback loops linking human capital development, digital capability, digital transformation, innovation capability, organizational learning, and entrepreneurial performance. Simulation results are expected to demonstrate that continuous investment in human capital and digital transformation creates a reinforcing cycle that enhances innovation, business productivity, competitiveness, and sustainable entrepreneurial growth. The findings provide a holistic framework for understanding the complexity of SME development and offer strategic insights for policymakers, practitioners, and SME owners in designing long-term digital transformation strategies. This study contributes to the literature by extending the application of System Thinking and System Dynamics in entrepreneurship research and by proposing an integrated dynamic model that supports strategic decision-making in the digital era.
