IMPACT OF LIBRARY AUTOMATION ON LEGAL RESEARCH IN ACADEMIC LAW LIBRARIES

Abstract

Library automation has transformed the landscape of academic law libraries by improving access to legal information, streamlining resource management, and enhancing the efficiency of legal research. This study examines the perceptions of, and the impact of, library automation on legal research within academic law libraries, with a particular focus on law colleges in Bangalore. The main objective of the study is to examine the level of automation implemented, analyse user awareness and satisfaction, and evaluate the extent to which automation tools support research productivity and information retrieval. The study found that most law college libraries have adopted automation to some extent, particularly in cataloguing, circulation and access to digital legal databases. Respondents perceived automation as highly beneficial for time-saving, research accuracy and improved access to judgments, legislation and scholarly articles. Inadequate staff, lack of training for staff, inconsistent ICT infrastructure, less awareness of available resources and technologies to the students and limited funding were identified as barriers to full automation. The study concludes that library automation significantly enhances legal research efficiency and user satisfaction when adequately implemented and supported. It recommends continuous staff development, increased investment in digital infrastructure and institutional policies promoting automation as integral to modern legal education and research.
