Global Research Competitiveness of the Top Ten Asian Countries: A Bibliometric Analysis of Scopus-Indexed Publications (2020–2025)

This study presents a comprehensive bibliometric assessment of the scientific research performance of the ten leading Asian countries during the period 2020–2025. Using data retrieved from the Scopus database, the study evaluates publication productivity, citation impact, institutional contributions, international collaboration patterns, and emerging research themes to provide insights into the evolving scientific landscape of Asia. A total of 8,087,616 publications were analyzed using established bibliometric indicators. Co-citation analysis, keyword co-occurrence analysis, and network visualization techniques were conducted through VOSviewer and Biblioshiny to identify influential institutions, collaboration networks, and thematic research areas. The findings reveal that China remains the leading contributor to scientific output in Asia, followed by India, Japan, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey. The Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China and the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences emerged as the most productive institutions. International research collaborations were particularly strong with the United States and Germany, highlighting the growing global integration of Asian research systems. Keyword analysis identified “scientific research output” as a prominent and recurring research theme, while journals such as Nature Communications, Scientific Reports, PLOS ONE, and Science of the Total Environment played a significant role in disseminating scholarly work.
The study is limited to publications indexed in Scopus; therefore, future research may incorporate additional databases to provide broader coverage. The findings offer valuable evidence for policymakers, funding agencies, and research administrators in formulating strategies to enhance scientific productivity, research quality, and international collaboration. Overall, the study provides an updated comparative overview of scientific development across Asia and highlights the need for continued investment in research infrastructure, innovation, and global partnerships to strengthen scientific competitiveness and impact.
