Assessing the Impact of Digital Platforms on Job Satisfaction among Gig Workers: Evidence from Bengaluru, Karnataka

Abstract

The rapid expansion of digital platforms has transformed employment by creating flexible work opportunities within the gig economy. This study investigates the impact of digital platform characteristics on the job satisfaction of gig workers in Bengaluru, Karnataka. Specifically, the study examines the influence of platform usability, algorithmic fairness, payment transparency, platform support, and work flexibility on workers' job satisfaction. A quantitative research design was adopted using a structured questionnaire, and data were collected from 390 gig workers. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and hierarchical multiple regression analyses were performed using R statistical software. The findings reveal that all five platform characteristics positively and significantly influence job satisfaction, with work flexibility and algorithmic fairness emerging as the strongest predictors. In contrast, demographic characteristics showed minimal influence on job satisfaction. The study highlights the importance of transparent algorithms, user-friendly platforms, responsive support systems, and flexible work arrangements in enhancing worker satisfaction. The findings provide valuable implications for platform companies, policymakers, and labour organizations seeking to develop fair, sustainable, and worker-centric digital employment ecosystems while contributing to the growing literature on platform-based work and the gig economy.
