Sustainable engineering has emerged as a critical approach to addressing environmental degradation, resource depletion, and increasing energy demand associated with industrialization and urban development. This review examines major sustainable engineering practices, with particular emphasis on energy auditing as a systematic tool for improving energy efficiency, optimizing resource utilization, and reducing environmental impacts. Energy audits enable the assessment of energy consumption patterns, identification of inefficiencies and losses, and development of technically and economically feasible measures for energy conservation and performance improvement. The review discusses key sustainable engineering strategies, including energy-efficient technologies, renewable energy integration, waste minimization, resource optimization, green manufacturing, and sustainable process design. It further examines the methodologies and applications of energy auditing across industrial, commercial, and institutional sectors, highlighting its potential to improve energy performance, reduce operational costs, enhance resource efficiency, and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. The review also considers major challenges associated with the adoption of sustainable engineering and energy-audit practices, including technological constraints, financial limitations, inadequate awareness and expertise, data-related limitations, and organizational barriers. In addition, emerging opportunities associated with smart energy management, digital monitoring, automation, artificial intelligence, and data-driven optimization are discussed. Overall, the review emphasizes that integrating energy auditing with broader sustainable engineering and energy-management practices can provide a systematic pathway toward efficient resource utilization, improved environmental performance, and long-term sustainable development.
