Digital Ghosts in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: A Data Science Approach to Forensic Cyberpsychology

Abstract

This article examines the emerging and intricate field of forensic cyberpsychology, with particular emphasis on the study of “digital ghosts” the enduring data trails people generate through their online presence and connected devices. As daily life becomes increasingly embedded in the digital sphere, these traces provide unparalleled insights into a person’s mindset, behaviours, and even their final moments, reshaping the ways investigators approach criminal cases, missing-person inquiries, and psychological autopsies. The discussion begins by outlining what constitutes a digital ghost, categorising data types from deliberate user-created content to passive metadata and information generated by the Internet of Things (IoT). It then traces the development of forensic cyberpsychology and its core investigative techniques, such as digital psychological autopsies, behavioural residue analysis, and linguistic profiling. Case studies highlight practical applications of these methods, including distinguishing suicide from homicide, uncovering offender profiles, and monitoring pathways to radicalisation. At the same time, the paper stresses that the opportunities offered by this discipline are accompanied by serious obstacles. It scrutinises challenges such as data encryption, overwhelming information volumes, ethical concerns about privacy and consent after death, and the complex legal issues surrounding admissibility and cross-border data access. Looking ahead, the article reflects on how advances in artificial intelligence and the rise of the metaverse may shape the field, while underscoring the pressing necessity for strong legal and ethical frameworks to regulate these “ghosts in the machine.” It concludes that forensic cyberpsychology is an indispensable tool for modern justice, but its responsible evolution depends on society’s ability to navigate these multifaceted challenges.
