Abstract

Enterprise service operations increasingly depend on real-time monitoring and automated decision support to manage volatile, high-volume workloads across distributed queues and channels. Conventional supervisory approaches rely on static thresholds and periodic manual review, an arrangement that does not scale as the number of concurrent signals grows and that leaves human supervisors positioned to intervene only after service degradation has already occurred. This article proposes a human-in-the-loop decision intelligence architecture that integrates an event-driven real-time data pipeline, a decision intelligence layer responsible for situational awareness and recommendation generation, and a supervisory interface designed around principles of automation transparency and cognitive load reduction. Drawing on control theory, human-automation interaction research, and enterprise service operations literature, the architecture is positioned as an intermediate design point between full automation and unassisted manual supervision, rather than at either extreme. Implementation implications and organizational consequences are discussed, together with the architecture's limitations under conditions of extreme data sparsity or adversarial input. The analysis suggests that supervisory roles under such an architecture would shift toward judgment-intensive exception handling rather than disappear, a redistribution of effort with implications for how enterprise service functions are staffed and governed going forward.
